About the Role:
We are seeking a Performance Engineer to support the ongoing operation and optimisation of our increasing BESS portfolio. The ideal candidate will be highly analytical, hands-on with data, and comfortable using SQL and Python to extract insights, develop tools, and support performance management initiatives. This is an exciting role that sits at the intersection of engineering, data science, and operations. The Performance Engineer will be responsible for managing the performance of assets of Pulse Clean Energy’s battery storage portfolio, from the Commercial Operations Date (COD) to End of Life ensuring all asset performance are successfully driven. The role will report to the Technical Asset Manager and will work closely with the commercial and execution teams.
Responsibilities:
- Performance Monitoring & Analysis
- Analyse operational and historical performance data across BESS assets to identify trends, deviations, and opportunities for improvement.
- Identify underperformance and work with suppliers on remedial actions.
- Track KPIs such as availability, efficiency, throughput, degradation etc.
- Root Cause Analysis:
- Investigate anomalies, faults, or trends in asset performance.
- Support root cause analysis of system alarms, failures; which cause down time or underperformance
- Work collaboratively with asset management and suppliers to provide data-backed recommendations
- Build lessons learnt and integrate these into future projects.
- Data Analysis & Visualisation:
- Use SQL to query large time series data sets
- Use Python for in-depth analysis, fault classification, and performance benchmarking.
- Build and maintain clear, concise visualisations and dashboards to communicate findings effectively.
- Build automated dashboards and reporting tools for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Tool Development & Automation:
- Develop and maintain internal tools/scripts to automate repetitive data tasks.
- Support alerting systems for performance or asset health issues.
- Trend analysis using customs scripts to determine common issues.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Assist the Technical Asset Manager with reporting, site visits coordination, and maintenance tracking.
- Support the Commercial Asset Manager with commercial performance reviews and revenue assurance.
- Prepare inputs for monthly and quarterly reports to senior management and board members.
- Help coordinate activities with third-party contractors including O&M providers and DNOs.
- Support in contract compliance tracking for O&M, warranties, metering, and grid services.
- Contribute technical insights to commercial, and operational teams.

- Cybersecurity Awareness & Data Integrity:
- Follow best practices for data access, integrity, and handling of operational information.
- Support penetration testing efforts for Operational Technology (OT)
What you need to succeed:
- Degree level education in engineering, data science or equivalent technical experience.
- Minimum 5 years experience with at least 2 years of experience in energy systems, data analysis, or performance engineering (experience with BESS preferred).
- Familiarity with SCADA and time series data
- Strong proficiency in SQL for querying large data sets
- Strong proficiency in Python or R for data analysis, scripting, reporting and visualisation
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with colleagues at all levels
- Organised, ability to multi-task and prioritise workload.
