Metlen signs BoP contract with Pulse Clean Energy for 129MW UK battery storage project

Metlen Energy signs BoP contract with Pulse Clean Energy for 129MW/362MWh Penn BESS in Wolverhampton, its largest UK storage project, targeting 2027 energisation.

Metlen Energy and Metals (formerly Mytilineos) has signed a Balance of Plant (BoP) contract with Pulse Clean Energy for the 129MW Penn battery energy storage system (BESS) in the West Midlands, with an installed capacity of 362MWh.

The project, located in Wolverhampton, is the largest energy storage development Metlen has undertaken in the UK by storage capacity to date.

Under the agreement, Metlen’s scope covers grid connection works alongside the broader BoP scope, with energisation targeted by the end of 2027.

METLEN operates in the UK through its M RESET renewables and storage platform and has now delivered or is working on around 30 battery storage units in the country, including hybrid and co-located solar-plus-storage projects, representing close to 2GWh of combined capacity.

Pulse and Metlen have worked together before, with Metlen having previously delivered the standalone 73.31MWh Coal Pit BESS for the developer.

The Penn project itself was originally designed as a 2-hour system before being reconfigured to a 2.4-hour duration, adding capacity from 310MWh to the 362MWh figure now confirmed.

Envision Energy was previously announced as the battery original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the project, supplying its Gen 7 BESS platform along with grid-forming capabilities.

At the same time, Norwegian independent power producer Statkraft holds a long-term route-to-market agreement covering trading and optimisation services for the battery storage system, alongside a revenue guarantee intended to support project financing.
